Police Violence: The Institution of Unfinished War in BiH

The police are investigating the case of mistreatment of Ajdin Jusic (14) from Osmaci near Zvornik, from whom the police tried to force a false confession. Politicians are asking for a redefinition of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republika Srpska (RS), and for the Ministry of Internal Affairs to stop politicizing.

“Attacks on returnees in Bratunac and returnees in the village of Tumare near Lukavac, offensive graffiti on a national basis, delays in investigations related to murders in which the police are suspected. The list of incidents, which constantly shake Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), is long. At the same time, only a small part receives the attention of the public and the media. Such a situation was cemented 30 years after the war, because there is something called the institution of an unfinished war, which has been present for the third decade,” said sociologist Slavo Kukic.

They refer to the last case that shook BiH, and it refers to the mistreatment of the boy Ajdin. He pointed out that this is a consequence of the non-functioning of institutions and the absence of the rule of law.

Methods of interrogation

The case of this boy, who says that he was beaten by members of the police station in Osmaci, shocked the public. This was confirmed by his father, Juso, who was listening to it all from another room. He was taken to the hearing accompanied by his father, in order to give a statement about the event, which, he claims, he did not even attend.

“They beat him because he didn’t want to put the blame on some people in order to solve the case, that’s what the inspector said yesterday, that they wanted to close the case,” claims Ajdin’s father.

Salkic: Dodik is to blame for everything

While the family is waiting for developments in the police, political representatives of Bosniaks in the RS say that this year there have been more attacks on Bosniaks in the RS than in the last ten years. Member of the National Assembly of the RS Ramiz Salkic (SDA) claims that discrimination against Bosniaks is continuously carried out, and that the attacks and threats are a direct consequence of the policies of the President of the RS Milorad Dodik (SNSD).

(Dis)trust of citizens

In the case of the beating of 14-year-old Ajdin Jusic, the Safe Network, which consists of 21 associations from all over BiH, and is managed by the Local Democracy Foundation, demands that the competent institutions in the RS urgently raise the issue of possible abuse of authority by officials of the RS Ministry of Internal Affairs.

“According to the Law on protection and treatment of children and minors in criminal proceedings, the duty of the police was to ensure the presence of experts and legal representatives in order to protect the child from psychological trauma and physical injuries,” it was said from the foundation and the Safe Network, DW reports.
