In Mostar, street signs bearing the names of Ustasha officials from the Second World War have begun to be replaced. This was confirmed by the mayor of Mostar, Mario Kordic.
This ended the period of 28 years when in the so-called western part of Mostar, where mostly citizens of Croatian nationality live, streets were named after people who were recorded in history as representatives of fascist terror carried out against other peoples and dissenters.
The decision to change the name of the streets was made by the City Council of Mostar in mid-July 2022.
It was decided to change name of Street of dr. Mile Budak, an official in the Government of the so-called Independent State of Croatia (NDH), and give it its pre-war name Street of Aleksa Santic.
Street of Vokic and Lorkovic, ministers in the NDH Government, was given the new name of Tin Ujevic Street, while Djuro Spuzevic Street was named Ismet Ico VoljevicaStreet.
Ivo Zelenika’s street is called Ciglana Street by the decision of the City Council of Mostar, while Rafael Boban Street changes its name to Fra Ljudevit Lasta Street.
The street named after the Ustasha commissioner for Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), Jure Francetic, will be called Humska streetin the future.
What preceded the change of streets?
The new names of Mostar’s streets were proposed by a special Commission formed by the City Council on June 28th, Slobodna Evropa reports.
