The capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo, is celebrating City Day today. On that day in 1941, Sarajevo was bombed for the first time, on the same day in 1945, it was liberated from the fascist occupier by Yugoslav partisan units, and April 6, 1992, symbolizes the first days of the siege of the city from 1992 to 1995.
April 6 is the most important date in the history of Sarajevo. Everything that happened on that date in 1945 and 1992 became a symbol of its citizens’ resistance to all forms of fascism, xenophobia, and hatred of the other and different.
It is the day when Sarajevo was liberated from the fascist occupation during World War II, but also the day that symbolizes the beginning of the siege of Sarajevo in the previous war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Therefore, April 6 is celebrated as the Day of Liberation of the City in World War II and as City Day.

On this day, he said, we especially remember those who defended Sarajevo.
“Their courage is the foundation on which we build a better tomorrow,” said the mayor in his congratulatory message.

“Sarajevo is not just a city of history – it is a city of the future, of innovation and of young people who believe in it. We want Sarajevo to be a modern, sustainable and inclusive European city. A city that preserves its soul, but builds new opportunities for every citizen.”
