Sarajevo Winner of the Label of the EU Mission in Turin

At the Conference of Mission Cities in Turin, the functional urban area of Sarajevo received the EU Mission Label from the European Commission, and the award was received on behalf of Sarajevo by the Prime Minister of the Sarajevo Canton Nihad Uk, the Deputy Mayor of the City of Sarajevo Predrag Puharić and the Mayor of the City of East Sarajevo Ljubiša Ćosić.

The award ceremony was held as part of the plenary session “From Commitment to Action: Celebrating Cities’ Climate Leadership”, chaired by Patrick Child, Deputy Director General of the European Commission’s Directorate General for the Environment.

The label formally confirms that Sarajevo has successfully created the “City Climate Agreement”, a strategic document containing concrete obligations, action plans and investment strategies to achieve climate neutrality by 2030, created in cooperation with citizens and local stakeholders.

Sarajevo is particularly recognized for the involvement of city authorities in this process, whose recommendations are already implemented through local policies.

With the Label, Sarajevo gets access to the Main Center for Climate Cities, which connects it with investors, consulting services of the European Investment Bank and a dedicated credit line of two billion euros.

  • This success is the result of the joint work of the Canton of Sarajevo, the City of Sarajevo and the City of East Sarajevo, which proves that our environmental and infrastructure challenges know no administrative boundaries. We are focused on three pillars: the complete modernization of heating, the traffic revolution through the electrification of public transport and the achievement of energy independence through solar panels on the roofs of our buildings and homes. This status positions us on the map of the most desirable destinations for green investments and opens the door to European funds and development banks. With today’s recognition, we have proven that we have a plan and European support to achieve this, said the Prime Minister of Sarajevo Canton Nihad Uk.

The news about the award of the label was announced in February 2026, when Sarajevo and Albanian Elbasan became the first cities in the Western Balkans to receive this European recognition, announced the Cabinet of the Prime Minister KS Nihad Uk.
