On this day in 1945 around noon, first units of the 26th Dalmatian Division broke through to Mostar, followed by the 19th Dalmatian and 29th Herzegovinian Division short after. Already around 7 p.m. nearly all German and Ustasha forces evaded Mostar.
Around 8 p.m., the supreme commander of the German forces Adolf Hitler, who had to personally approve every withdrawal at the time, admitted to be defeated and issued an order for the withdrawal of the dispersed army. On February 14, 1995, at 8 p.m., the city of Mostar was free.
Mostar paid dearly for its freedom in the Second World War. The city paid the freedom with 750 killed soldiers and 1.517 victims of the fascist, Chetnik and Ustasha terrors. In other words, every eight resident of the city did not live to experience the freedom again. The city had its battalion, illegal printing press, and it gave 14 national heroes and seven hanged patriots.
