The Supreme Court of Colorado ruled that Donald Trump cannot run for president of the United States next year in this American state.
The court ruled by a vote of four to three that Trump was not an acceptable candidate because he participated in the riot in the US Capitol almost three years ago.
“We do not come to these conclusions lightly. We are aware of the magnitude and gravity of the issues now before us. We are also aware of our solemn duty to apply the law, without fear or favor and without being influenced by public reaction to the decisions the law requires us to make,” it said. in the judge’s decision.
Trump’s team called the decision anti-democratic and announced that they would file an appeal, the BBC reported.
This court decision, which has been put on hold until next month for a potential appeal, does not apply to other US states except Colorado.
The decision affects only the state’s primary election on March 5, when Republican voters will choose their presidential nominee, but could affect Colorado’s general election next November.
This is the first use of an amendment to the US Constitution to disqualify a presidential candidate.
Similar attempts to get Trump off the ballot in New Hampshire, Minnesota and Michigan failed.
