Statistics are not particularly applicable in education. The situation in the labor market testifies to this. When will the education system be harmonized with the needs of the economy? Why do educated people, especially those with deficient occupations, leave Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH)? These are the questions that the profession has been asking for years. There are positive developments, but not enough.
The greater danger of the incompatibility of the educational system with the requirements of the economy, the uncertain political situation, and low economic growth, experts warn, is that the departure of young people becomes a routine, an obligation, and a common path after graduation. What drives young people out of BiH?
”It has become a bit more usual for health professionals, unfortunately, to leave our health system, and with that in the future BiH, which is becoming a country of the elderly, will have a huge problem providing formal services in the field of health care,” warns Kenan Galijasevic, senior assistant at the University of Zenica (UNZE) Medical Faculty.
It is encouraging to know that most young people, despite the difficulties, want to stay and contribute to building a better society.
The synergy between the education sector, the business community, and decision-makers is needed to stop this unfavorable and very dangerous trend for society. The unsustainable situation, they say in the economy, has been going on for too long.
In the whole story, the choice of occupation is very important, but also the higher education institution where a certain title will be acquired.
For some occupations, such as the IT sector, globalization has made the labor market available anywhere.
Potent higher education institutions are not waiting for the slow bureaucratic apparatus. They say they work on their own as much as they can.
”We include a lot of people from the economy. We also include our graduate engineers. We get feedback from them on what our market needs. We listen through international projects that are currently trending in Europe,” states Miroslav Kostadinovic, vice dean for teaching at the Faculty of Transportation East Sarajevo.
Education in the Federation of BiH (FBiH) is a constitutional obligation and a right of the canton. This may be a definite advantage.
”That is why we have passed a new Law on Secondary School, which allows us that as much as 30 percent of its content or curriculum can be changed in accordance with the needs of the local labor market,” explains Bernadeta Galijasevic, Assistant Minister of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports of Zenica-Doboj Canton (ZDC).
