With how many Countries BiH has established diplomatic Relations?

flagsBiH has established diplomatic relations with 172 countries and establishment of diplomatic relations with 16 more countries is expected in the near future.

BiH has not established diplomatic relations with 20 out of 193 countries members of the United Nations. Those are the countries with which BiH has not shared acknowledgments neither established diplomatic relations consequently. However, BiH cooperates with these countries diplomatically when a need arises and the procedure of establishing diplomatic relations and mutual acknowledging between the countries is in progress.

In 2008, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH launched a procedure of establishing diplomatic relations with the remaining countries members of the UN (44 at that time), in accordance with the decision reached by the Presidency of BiH. Following 24 countries responded positively: Dominica, Djibouti, Dominican Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Fiji, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Liberia, Malawi, Mexico, Nepal, Nigeria, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Swaziland, Thailand, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu and Zimbabwe. Diplomatic relations have been established with these countries by the means of letter exchange.

The remaining twenty countries have not responded ever since, given that those are remote and small island nations with weak administrative capacities. The procedure of establishing diplomatic relations with these countries has been launched again and it is reasonable to expect that BiH will have diplomatic relations established with all countries members of the UN soon.

In 2008 in New York, the Standing Mission of BiH in the United Nations launched activities on establishing diplomatic relations with 20 following countries: The Bahamas, Barbados, Bhutan, Central African Republic, Granada, Kiribati, Lesotho, Madagascar, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Somalia, South Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tonga and Vanuatu. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of BiH, it is being intensively worked on establishing diplomatic relations with 16 of the above listed 20 countries.

Of the countries that are not full members of the UN, BiH has established diplomatic relations with the Vatican, Palestine and the Order of Malta.

BiH has established diplomatic relations with the Cook Islands, but it has never acknowledged this nation as an independent country nor was it ever requested to do so.

“A conclusion can be drawn that we have not acknowledged any country which aspires for acknowledgement by the international community nor we have established diplomatic relations with such countries, thus neither with Kosovo or Krim,” said the Head of Public Relations Office of the MFA BiH, Nebojša Regoje.
