The river Sutjeska has been turned into a shallow stream with cloudy water, and due to the systematic destruction of nature, today exactly at noon, a citizens’ protest called the “Battle for Sutjeska” began.

In three localities, on the rivers Jabušnica, Sutjeska and Sastavci, works are underway on the construction of mini hydroelectric power plants.

The hydropower plants are being built on the border with the Sutjeska National Park, which encompasses the wider area of the Sutjeska river basin, including the strictly protected reserve, Perućica rainforest, as well as parts of the Maglić and Volujak mountains.

The result of these activities is the devastation of riverbeds and the surrounding area. In this area, fish deaths, the collapse of the natural course of the river, and uncontrolled cutting of the forest have been recorded, according to local residents from the village of Izgori, who organized a protest with the symbolic name “Battle for Sutjeska” at exactly 12:00 today, BHRT writes.
