Bosnia and Herzegovina became a member of the United Nations (UN) 33 years ago today, on May 22, 1992.

The flag of our country was raised on the flagpole together with the flags of Slovenia and Croatia.

The then Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (RBiH), Haris Silajdžić, addressed the United Nations General Assembly, and the reception was also attended by the then President of the Presidency of the RBiH, Alija Izetbegović.

In his speech, Silajdžić, among other things, warned that genocide was beginning to occur in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He called on the UN Security Council to activate Chapter 7 of the United Nations Charter, which allows international military intervention to preserve regional peace and stability.

The first Bosnian ambassador to the UN was Muhamed Šaćirbegović.

This date is one of the most significant in the modern history of BiH. With the admission of BiH to the UN 33 years ago, the fundamental legal and other preconditions were created for the realization of all those contents and forms on the basis of which a state is present, according to its capabilities and needs, on the international political, economic, cultural and every other scene, in Bosnia and Herzegovina’s relations with the world.
