Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Saturday that Italy will never waver in its support for Ukraine, and that the current standoff in the war shows that the Western response to Russia’s invasion of its neighbor was the right one.

“I believe that China and India have a role to play in resolving the conflict. The only thing that cannot happen is to think that the conflict can be resolved by leaving Ukraine,” Meloni said after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the TEHA forum.

“The choice to support Ukraine is first and foremost a choice of national interest and it is a choice that will not change,” Meloni said at the annual TEHA business forum in northern Italy, Reuters reports.

Meloni also highlighted that Italy’s support is a key priority for her government, especially as it prepares to host the Ukraine Recovery Conference in 2025.

Discussions between Meloni and Zelensky focused on Ukraine’s reconstruction needs, particularly in the energy sector, as well as military aid that Italy has been providing, with the stipulation that it is used solely for defensive purposes.
