Ministry of Environmental Protection and the Public Health Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s (BiH’s) capital Sarajevo has warned citizens on the exceedance of pollutant particles in the air on Thursday.
The most concentration of floating particles was recorded in the suburb of Ilidza, measuring 184 micrograms per cubic meter, ministry and institute stated in a joint report, adding that the prescribed values are 50 micrograms per cubic meter.
The cause of high dust concentration is the Sahara wind that transports dust particles over long distances, the report explains.
The high concentrations of pollutants in the air and daily exceedances of prescribed values of concentrations in Sarajevo are expected in the upcoming days.
Residents of Sarajevo are advised to avoid going outdoors in the circumstances of heavily polluted air since long-term and peak exposures to pollutants range in severity of impact, and can impair the respiratory system.
