For visitors of the monument complex ‘Tunnel D-B’ in Sarajevo, entrance until Mid-May will be free.
On occasion of marking the 21st anniversary of the digging and putting into operation the ‘Tunnel D-Day’, ‘Open Door Days’ was organized, during which students of nine grades in Sarajevo primary schools visited the tunnel for free.
‘’Pupils at primary schools will be able to sightsee and get to know the museum setting, explore the authentic parts of the tunnel and its historical background, and a lecture about the dangers of mines and unexploded ordnance from employees of the Memorial Fund’’, said to Fena the Assistant Director of the Memorial Fund Suad Zijadić. He added that during last year’s ‘Open Door Days’ the tunnel was visited by around 3.500 students.
This activity will last until Mid-May. ‘’Last year, there were around 80.000 visitors’’, said Zijadić, and emphasized that the tunnel has more foreign visitors than B&H visitors.
‘’Tourists come from Slovenia and Croatia mostly during the weekends. During April and May, and in September and October there are excursions here. The tunnel is most often visited in August’’.
From 1 April the tunnel will be open according to the summer schedule from 9:00 to 17:00.
The monument war tunnel ‘War Tunnel D-B’ is known to the public as the Tunnel of Hope because this was its mission for the citizens of Sarajevo during the siege of the 1990’s. During the siege of Sarajevo, it served to deliver the basic needs for the survival of the citizens of Sarajevo.
