Tito’s Cave brings together Anti-fascists from Bosnia and Herzegovina

The cave and memorial house in Plahovići near Kladnje gathered anti-fascists from several cities of Bosnia and Herzegovina again this year. This is the place where Josip Broz Tito stayed with his closest associates during the summer of 1943, and which in historiography is linked to the activities that preceded the First Session of the National Anti-Fascist Council for the People’s Liberation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ZAVNOBiH). The participants of the commemoration said that the preservation of the anti-fascist tradition has a special significance even today.

A place important for history

After the Battle of Sutjeska, during the summer of 1943, the top of the National Liberation Movement stayed in Plahovići. Today, it is a gathering place for those who want to preserve the memory of the events that marked one of the most significant periods of recent history.

President of the Association of Anti-Fascists and Fighters of the National Liberation War of the Tuzla Canton, Zlatko Dukić, emphasized the importance of this locality for the development of the idea of Bosnian statehood.

“83 years ago, the germ of ZAVNOBiH was planted in this place, that is, the efforts to make Bosnia and Herzegovina equal with other federal units in the future Yugoslavia,” said Dukić.

Anti-fascism as a permanent value

Participants remind that they see the significance of this place not only through historical facts, but also through messages that, they say, can be important even today. They believe that anti-fascism does not belong exclusively to the past, but that it represents values that need to be nurtured in contemporary society as well.

President of the Union of Anti-Fascists and Fighters of the National Liberation War of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sead Đulić, said that Tito’s cave remains a place of inspiration.

“This is a place of inspiration for our struggles. Tito’s partisan battles were won. It is history, song and memory. We must fight our battles,” said Đulić.

Tito’s cave near Kladnje is not only a historical location from the Second World War. It was here, during the summer of 1943, that the talks began that paved the way to maintaining ZAVNOBiH and restoring the statehood of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Academician Mirko Pejanović recalled the historical significance of events connected to this place.

“It is believed that here in Kladnje, during Tito’s stay in the cave, an initiative was launched that led to the holding of the First Session of ZAVNOBiH and the Second Session of AVNOJ. Today, Bosnia and Herzegovina, after the dissolution of the Yugoslav Federation and the referendum of its citizens, is an independent, sovereign and internationally recognized state,” said Pejanović.

A message from the youngest

A special moment of celebrating Tito’s Cave Day in Kladnje was the message from the youngest.

A student at Kladanj Elementary School, Malik Mazalović, said that the values of freedom should be preserved and passed on to future generations.

“May the message of this place be heard far and wide. A person may get tired, but he must not give up. Time passes, but the truth remains. Generations come and go, but freedom always seeks its guardians. In honor of the fighters. In honor of freedom. In honor of man,” said Mazalović.

Although more than eight decades have passed since the events associated with Tito’s Cave, this place still brings together people of different generations. For some, it is a symbol of the anti-fascist struggle, and for others, an important part of the historical heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Federalna writes.
