UDIK Reminds Public of War Crimes Committed in Brcko

The Association for Social Research and Communication (UDIK) reminds the public of the war crimes committed in Brčko during the war against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The occupation of Brčko began with the destruction of the Sava Bridge on 30 April 1992. During May, non-Serbs were taken to concentration camps. The most infamous was the Luka camp. The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) characterized the crimes of Goran Jelisić and Ranko Češić as crimes against humanity. The Serbian Adolf was sentenced to forty years in prison, and Češić to eighteen years in prison.

“As part of its agenda to commemorate civilian victims of war, UDIK has implemented a series of activities aimed at permanently memorializing civilians killed in the Crafts Center in Brčko. Among other things, in May 2023, UDIK submitted an initiative to the Assembly of the Brčko District of B&H to erect a memorial plaque at the entrance to the Crafts Center in Brčko. This is where Goran Jelisić killed Hajrudin Muzurović and Husein Kršo. The photographs of the murder were recorded by Belgrade photojournalist Bojan Stojanović. They were evidence of war crimes in Brčko. Although the images and location are well known to the citizens of Brčko, we have not yet received a response from the District Assembly,” UDIK writes.

In March last year, the same initiative was sent to the Mayor of Brčko District of B&H, the President of the Assembly of Brčko District of B&H, and three commissions of the Assembly of Brčko District of B&H.

Given that there is still no response, UDIK sent letters to these institutions again last month in the hope of receiving a positive response.

Today, 7 May 2025, in the daily Oslobođenje we are publishing an obituary in memory of Hajrudin Muzurović and Husein Kršo as an alternative solution until the memorial plaque is erected. But also, as an example of how it could look like. Also, today at 2:00 PM, UDIK will visit the crime scene with the families of the murdered civilians Muzurović and Kršo. As last year, relatives will be able to lay flowers at the site of the murder of their family members, remember them together, and appeal to the Brčko authorities to erect a memorial plaque.

Thirty-three years have passed, and the place of execution of the Brčko civilians remains unmarked. It is high time that local authorities make efforts to mark the place appropriately. Justification for what has not been done is a new dehumanization of the victims. We call on the authorities of the Brčko District of B&H to place a memorial plaque on the wall of the Craft Center in Brčko.
