A kidney transplant was successfully performed at the Clinical Center of the University of Sarajevo (KCUS) last week, and another young life was saved.

In the multitude of negative topics and news, it is especially important to mention the positive ones, and one of such is the story of sisters Jasminka Dautovic and Amela Cizmic. After learning that her sister needed a kidney, Jasminka decided to help her without hesitating.

“Amela has been on dialysis for eight years, and she also has lupus, which has hampered the transplant the most. She was not in favor of the transplant at first, she said she was feeling well anyway. She refused because I have a family, she was worried about me. But over time she became weaker and we realized in February this year that surgery was inevitable. We contacted the doctors and I said I wanted to donate a kidney to her and save her,” Jasminka told.

She added that her doctors then confirmed that she could be a donor to her sister, after which she traveled from Travnik to Sarajevo to perform the necessary tests and preparations for the transplant. After the examinations were completed, the operation was performed on November 11th.

“I am the happiest woman after this operation, believe me, this is something that lifted me above all. The kidney is functioning, the sister is recovering, and I am fine too. I will be home soon. I hope our story will motivate many others because – the operation is not terrible, the loss of a loved one is much more painful, “explained the brave woman from Travnik.

Jasminka saved the young life with such a selfless and humane act, motivated all those who are still waiting for a donor for transplantation, and inspired and encouraged many who want to help the sick on their path to recovery.

After the transplant, Amela thanked the hospital staff and especially emphasized her endless gratitude to her sister. On the other hand, the Association of Dialysis and Transplant Patients of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) invited citizens to talk and educate themselves about transplants and help the sick by giving them hope and help in the fight against serious illness.
