Finland extends the Closure of its Border with Russia for another Month

Finland will extend the closure of its border with Russia after January 14, the media announced today.

“The government will close all eight checkpoints along the eastern border with Russia at least until February 11,” Interior Minister Mari Rantanen said at a press conference, public broadcaster YLE reported.

Rantanen added that nothing has changed at the border since it was closed in December.

“National security is a key issue for Finland,” she said.

She noted that her ministry is currently investigating alternative means to permanently resolve the situation at the border.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo told YLE on Tuesday that the threat assessment, which led to the closure of the border in December, remained unchanged.

In December, Finland announced the complete closure of its border with Russia, claiming that Russian authorities were continuing a “hybrid operation” against the country.
